DESCRIPTION: EPW - John Ellicott, London, cylinder fusee quarter-hour repeater, 49mm, gilt tombac alloy OF pair cases with shagreen pique to outer, inner pierced for sound transmission and ornately engraved with foliate detail around perimeter and grotesque mask at 6, outer with casemaker's incuse marking with first letter somewhat ambiguous but marking may be "P G" which suggests possibly Peter Goujon as casemaker, inner with no hallmarks or casemaker's marking evident within when bell is removed, white enamel dial, slide under dial at 5:30 for dumb repeat function, cylinder escapement, diamond endstone, gilt mvt with pierced and engraved foliate scrolled balance cock, signed gilt locking dust-cap, s#2948 with matching serial number to dust-cap. We believe this piece to be of 1740s vintage per the approximation of serial number to dating given in Brian Loomes' "Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World."
CONDITION: Mvt: NR, fusee usually releasing backward immediately when winding is attempted though occasionally will stop and hold a partial wind and is ticking with good escapement action when this occurs, good repeat function and tone aside from the progression to and through the quarter strikes which ranges from sluggish to occasionally stalling entirely unless a bit of coaxing is given to the strike train, dumb repeat slide with good function when held but releases if not held, overhaul needed for winding function and for unstalled progress through full repeat function, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some scattered scratches and fine scratches; dial with hl or fracture from 5 to 8, light hl from center to 5:30, some patched edge chipping between 8:30 and 10, some scattered mild fine scratches; excellent hour hand, minute hand has been crudely repaired with a spade of differing color soldered onto its stem; outer case shows medium to ample wear with ample portions of shagreen loss to bezel and losses to areas of rear perimeter, tombac alloy with only some small portions of gilt finish remaining, button latch good; inner case shows very light wear, no dents or dings, gilt substantially intact with only a few small bits of loss, excellent engraving detail; bow pivots freely; domed glass bull's-eye crystal with scattered mostly small scratches, internal edge flake at 10:30.
ESTIMATE: $2000 - $4000
